What is Reiki?

What is Reiki?

As for the definition of Reiki in general, it is a system for natural healing and self-improvement by assisting the body in restoring energetic balance for the well-being and health of the mind, body and spirit. It is a Japanese form of stress reduction and relaxation.  It was discovered by Mikao Usui in March 1922.

The word Reiki comes from Japanese kanji. Kanji are ideograms used in the written language of Japan. The word Reiki is represented by two kanji, "Rei" and "Ki."

"Rei" is universal, meaning it is present everywhere. It is the higher mind or higher consciousness, those higher areas of consciousness that are beyond ego. This is the higher intelligence of the universe, the same intelligence that tells your heart when to beat and the other organs how to work. It is free of negativity and is filled with compassion, kindness, love, peace, wisdom and all the positive qualities imaginable!

"Ki" is primal life energy of the universe. This is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. We are alive because life energy (Ki) is flowing through us. It flows within the physical body through pathways called meridians, chakras and nadis. It can also pass directly through tissues and organs of the body. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Well-being is the fee and balanced flow of healthy Ki.

Therefore, a good definition of Reiki is that it is "the primal energy of the universe being guided by the highest wisdom of the universe."

What is a Reiki treatment like?

A typical Reiki treatment lasts about 60 minutes, but can be modified as needed. You may be seated, standing or lying down. Reiki is a series of hand positions which may be administered hands-on where alight touch is applied or hands-off where the hands are held slightly above the body. The practitioner will ask your preference.

During a treatment you may feel physical sensations such as warmth or tingling. Most people report feeling very relaxed and peaceful. Some enter a limnal state (between waking and sleeping) and some actually fall asleep.

Upon follow-up, people say that their mood has improved, they are less anxious, stressed and feel more confident and focused. With regards to physical issues, some have reported that a lump or bump has disappeared or that particular pain has dissipated.
