What is Qigong?

Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. It is the art and science of using breathing techniques, gentle movement and meditation to cleanse the life energy.

The word Qigong (Chi Kong) is made up of two Chinese words. Qi is pronounced chee and is us usually translated to mean the life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. Gong means to cultivate or refine, leading to mastery. So Qigong means to cultivate or refine one’s vitality or life force through practice.


The history of Qigong predates written records. Some archaeological studies have found evidence of Qigong practices as far back as 7,000 years ago. Since then, a wide variety of Qigong forms have been developed within different segments of Chines society. In traditional Chinese medicine it is used for preventive and curative functions, in Chinese martial arts it is used to enhance fighting abilities, in Daoism and Buddhism it is part of meditative practice, and in Confucianism it is to promote longevity and to improve moral character. Research concerning Qigong has been conducted for a wide range of medical conditions, including hypertension, pain, and cancer treatment.

You probably do not realize it but you have doing Qigong all your life. When you sleep!
